Follett ice machine repair, done by an independent shop

Follett’s Chewblet nugget ice is a favorite in hospitals, cafes, and hotels because the soft, chewable ice holds up in a cooler without turning to slush. The Horizon Elite and Horizon 700 make it with an auger pressing ice against an evaporator, which is a different failure pattern than a standard cube machine. We service Follett as an independent shop. We’re not a factory dealer and we don’t claim a Follett authorization. What we are is a CSLB-licensed refrigeration outfit (#1136642) that sees these machines regularly.

What actually breaks

The call we get most is a coked-up condenser coil. Follett condensers sit low and pull air across fins packed tight together, so kitchen grease and dust load them up faster than a standard cuber. Once the coil’s coated, head pressure climbs, the compressor draws higher amps than the nameplate calls for, and the machine either short-cycles or trips out on high pressure. We pull the coil, run a real chemical clean, not just a rinse, and check amp draw against spec before we call it done.

Run capacitors are the next most common failure, especially on machines running hot from a dirty coil the owner never had cleaned. A weak or failed run cap shows up as a compressor that hums and won’t start, or one that starts hard and trips the internal overload repeatedly. We test capacitance against the printed microfarad rating and swap it if it’s out of tolerance, no guessing.

The auger and water path is where nugget machines differ most from cube ice. A worn auger bearing or seal lets water bypass into the ice chute, or the auger motor overloads and trips out mid-cycle. We check auger torque, inspect the gearbox and seals, and confirm the water fill valve and float are metering correctly before we sign off. Drain lines on Follett units run narrow and clog with the fine nugget-ice slurry more than a standard cube machine’s drain does; a slow or backed-up drain is worth checking before assuming it’s a bigger fault.

Symphony Plus dispensers add an ice-and-water valve assembly on top of the ice-making side. When a dispenser only trickles water or won’t dispense ice at all, we’re usually looking at the dispense valve, a stuck agitator paddle, or a water line freezing up from a bad thermostat. We carry the common valve and sensor parts on the truck for repairs involving parts we usually stock.

Sealed-system and water notes

Follett’s Horizon line runs R404A. Sealed-system work goes through us in-house, meaning proper recovery, evacuation, and a weighed-in charge, not a top-off. We hold EPA Section 608 certification (#1279674151528) for refrigerant handling, and we’re trained on R290 hydrocarbon refrigerant through Mainstream Engineering for the newer units that use it. If your machine is water-cooled, we service the water regulating valve and check the water tower or cooling loop too.

Bay Area water is hard on the auger seals and the fill valve as much as the coil. We recommend a filter change every six months and a full descale on the same cycle, tighter than the printed twelve-month interval, because scale here builds faster than a factory manual written for the national average assumes.

From a recent job

We diagnosed a Follett Horizon 700 Chewblet nugget ice machine at Cafe 1277 in Walnut Creek that was tripping on high pressure and short-cycling. The condenser coil was coked with kitchen grease and dust, and amp draw confirmed the compressor was working harder than it should. We cleaned the coil and tested the run capacitor, which measured well outside its rated 15µF and got swapped along with the clean. Ice production was back to normal after the on-site diagnosis.
