- Shared mechanical room heat load at the food court. The Tanforan food court runs several ice and beverage units out of one back-of-house mechanical space, and the combined heat load pushes ambient higher than any single unit's spec sheet accounts for. One machine's condenser fights the exhaust off the one next to it. I measure actual room temperature at the condenser intake before diagnosing a unit as undersized or failing.
- Volume-driven purge valve and float wear. Soft Hetch Hetchy water means less scale, but San Bruno Avenue's restaurant volume still cycles the purge valve and float switch hard, and mechanical wear catches up eventually, cloudy cubes, a slow harvest, or a float that sticks open. I test and replace the worn part off the truck rather than assuming it's a water problem.
- No-harvest faults on grocery deli counter units. A deli counter ice machine that won't drop ice during a lunch rush is usually the curtain switch not tripping the harvest valve or a frosted harvest sensor. We usually stock the common repair parts, and we confirm timing after the on-site diagnosis.

Does soft water mean I don't need to maintain the machine?
It helps, but it's not a free pass. San Bruno's mostly Hetch Hetchy supply keeps scale down, but the purge valve, float switch, and harvest components still wear from cycling. Skip the filter and service interval and you'll still end up with a breakdown, just from a different cause than scale. -
