It's real. I see condensers here pit and lose capacity faster than the same unit would inland, purely from ocean spray. The coating costs something up front, but it's cheaper than replacing a coil years early. I'll tell you honestly if your unit doesn't need it yet.

Salt air corrodes condenser fins and control-box hardware faster here than almost anywhere else I work, so a coil that would last years inland can pit and lose heat-rejection capacity in a fraction of that time. I clean and inspect for corrosion on a shorter cycle than I'd set anywhere else on the Peninsula.

What we close on the truck.

Salt-corroded condenser fins. Ocean spray settles on outdoor and rooftop condensers day after day, and the salt eats at the aluminum fins until heat rejection drops and the machine trips on high pressure earlier in its life than it should. I clean the coil, check fin condition against what's normal for the unit's age, and recommend a protective coil coating on units exposed directly to the wind off the water.
Corroded control-box contacts and intermittent no-start. Salt air works into control-box gaskets over the years, and contactor contacts pit until the machine starts intermittently or not at all, especially after a damp week. I clean or replace the contactor, check the gasket seal, and reseal anywhere salt has a path in.
Neglected machines with combined scale and corrosion. A lower-volume beach-town bar doesn't generally get its ice machine serviced on schedule, and by the time I'm called the problem is usually two things at once, scale on the evaporator from a skipped descale and corrosion from the salt air both at work. We provide a written repair estimate after the on-site diagnosis and before any work starts.
