Crathco in Walnut Creek

Crathco refrigeration in Walnut Creek.

In Walnut Creek the Crathco call we hear most is a bowl that will not get cold, or one that freezes so hard the auger jams. Both come back to the refrigeration side, the compressor and the cold cone that pull heat out of the product. Downtown is the busiest dining scene in the Diablo Valley, and a dispenser at a Broadway Plaza restaurant that runs warm at noon is a health risk and a lost sale at the same time.

Bay Area Refrigeration Service is an independent shop, not a Crathco dealer, and we make no claim of factory authorization or brand certification. Andrew Kuznetsov works out of San Ramon, is EPA 608 certified for refrigerant work, and holds CSLB #1136642. The R290 propane charge in many of these units is small but flammable, so the sealed side is work for someone with the license to touch it.

Every job opens with a $75 diagnostic that we waive once you approve the repair, and you see a written quote first. No surprises get added after the fact.

Common repairs we do

What we close on the truck.

  • Cold plate that will not cool or freezes too hard. A Crathco bowl that runs warm has usually lost part of its R290 charge, has a tired compressor, or has a cold cone caked in scale that blocks heat transfer. A bowl that over-freezes is the other extreme, often a stuck thermostat or control holding the cycle too long until the auger binds in solid slush. We read the sealed-system pressures, check the cone temperature against the setting, and correct the charge or the control so the product sits at the right consistency.
  • Bowl gaskets, shaft seals, and O-rings that weep. When product creeps past the shaft or pools at the base of the bowl, the soft parts have given up. Heat from a downtown kitchen and daily cleaning cycles harden the rubber faster than most operators expect. We strip the bowl down, fit new O-rings on the shaft, replace the base gasket, and check the drip path so the seal holds through a full dinner service instead of leaking product onto the line.
  • Magnetic drive coupling that slips or stalls. On the sealed Crathco design the auger is turned by a magnet through the tank wall, with no shaft passing through to leak. If that magnetic link weakens or the coupling cracks, the bowl slows or stops while the motor keeps running. We match the drive magnet to the bowl magnet, look for a worn bushing dragging the auger, and replace the failed half so the mix stays even from open to close.

FAQ

Crathco in Walnut Creek questions, answered.

  • How far is San Ramon to Walnut Creek, and do you cover downtown?
It is a straight shot up 680 for us, through Alamo and past Lafayette, usually under half an hour outside rush hour. We cover all of Walnut Creek, from Broadway Plaza to the office blocks and cafes north of the freeway.
  • The bowl freezes so hard the paddle stops at night. What causes that?
That is an over-freeze, and it is usually the thermostat or control not ending the cycle when it should. The product turns to a block, the auger cannot push through it, and the drive strains against the load. We test the control and the freeze setting, then set the cycle so the bowl holds a soft slush instead of a solid one.
  • Can you service a unit while the restaurant stays open?
Most of the time, yes. We work at the counter and try to keep one bowl running while we repair another, which matters during a Broadway Plaza lunch rush. If we have to pull the sealed system apart we will tell you how long that station is down before we start.
