Crathco in Livermore

Crathco refrigeration in Livermore.

The agitator and pump motors in a Crathco spin for hours a day, and the bearings wear from it. When you hear a grind or a high whine out of a spray or bubbler unit, that noise is usually a bearing on its way out. Left alone it drags the motor down and can seize the drive. We rebuild or replace the motor before it takes the rest of the assembly with it.

The First Street tasting rooms and restaurants downtown lean on these machines through the wine-country season, and the outlet crowd keeps a steady pour going all afternoon. A motor that squeaks in spring will quit in the July heat, so we would rather find it while it is still just a noise.

We are independent, EPA 608 certified, CSLB #1136642. You get a written quote before any work starts, and the $75 diagnostic is waived with the repair.

Common repairs we do

What we close on the truck.

  • Worn agitator and pump motor bearings. A grinding or whining Crathco motor has bearings that are done. We open the motor, inspect the bearings and the shaft for play, and rebuild or swap it out. Catching it at the noise stage saves the drive and keeps a busy tasting-room unit from failing on a packed weekend.
  • Spray head and bubbler pump trouble. When the spray fountain drops off or the bubbler stops arching, the pump is losing pressure. We check the pump, the impeller, and the lines for wear or scale, then rebuild the head so it circulates the way it should. Weak circulation also lets the product warm, so we confirm the pour and the temperature together.
  • Seized drive motor and electrical faults. A motor that hums but will not turn has often seized, or it has lost a start component. We test the windings, the capacitor, and the overload, and replace the motor when the bearings have already locked it. On the older First Street machines we also check the wiring and connections that heat and vibration loosen over the years.

FAQ

Crathco in Livermore questions, answered.

  • Do you cover Livermore out of San Ramon?
We do. It is a straight shot from San Ramon down 680 to 580 through Dublin and Pleasanton into Livermore, so First Street and the tasting rooms around downtown are a regular stop for us.
  • Our Crathco makes a grinding noise when it runs. Is that serious?
It can be. A grind or a loud whine is usually a worn bearing in the agitator or pump motor. If you keep running it, the bearing can seize and take the motor and drive with it, so it is worth looking at before the busy stretch.
  • Can you service our machines before the summer wine-country rush?
Yes, and that is the right time to do it. We check the motors, seals, and refrigeration ahead of the heat, so a unit that is marginal in spring does not quit on you during a full tasting-room weekend.
