Crathco in Albany
Crathco refrigeration in Albany.
A Crathco dispenser that won't hold cold is a call we get regularly out of Albany. When a bowl of iced tea comes out warm or a FROZEN unit locks into a solid block, the sealed system is the first place we look. On R290 units the charge is small, so a minor leak or a struggling compressor shows up fast as a warm bowl. We check the cold-plate and the control settings alongside the gauge readings before we say what it needs.
Albany packs a dense run of cafes and small restaurants along Solano Avenue, shared in character with the North Berkeley stretch of the same street, plus more storefronts where San Pablo Avenue crosses through. A lot of these counters lean on cold and frozen drinks through a long service day, and in a footprint this size there's no good place to let a broken dispenser just sit. We show up with the parts on hand so the fix doesn't need a second trip.
Andrew Kuznetsov owns Bay Area Refrigeration Service, an independent shop based in San Ramon, EPA 608 certified with CSLB #1136642 on file. The $99 diagnostic is credited toward the repair, and every job starts with a written quote.
Common repairs we do
What we close on the truck.
- Product runs warm or the FROZEN bowl over-freezes. The narrow temperature band on a Crathco cold-plate or FROZEN unit doesn't leave much margin for error. A warm bowl traces back to the R290 charge most of the time, whether from a leak or a compressor that's fading. An over-frozen bowl is a different animal, usually the thermostat or a control board giving a bad reading. We gauge the sealed system first, then work the controls, and dial the freeze setting back to where it should sit.
- Grinding or whine from the drive motor. When a Crathco drive motor starts grinding or whining, the bearings are on their way out. That extra friction drives the current draw up until the motor stalls for good. We pull the motor, measure the play in the bearings and shaft, and swap it out once that play is past spec, which brings the quiet turn back.
- Bowl paddle sits still. If the motor is running but the paddle isn't moving, the magnetic coupling that links the drive to the auger has let go. We inspect both magnets for wear and clean the shaft of anything blocking a solid lock. Once the matching Crathco coupling is back in, we verify the paddle is turning under load.

FAQ
Crathco in Albany questions, answered.
-
Our Solano Avenue counter runs several bowls at once. Can you handle them all in one visit?
Yes. We provide a written repair estimate after the on-site diagnosis and before any work starts. -
You're based in San Ramon. Is Albany too far for a service call?
No. Albany is Alameda County, tucked between Berkeley and El Cerrito, and it falls on our regular Inner East Bay route, about forty to forty five minutes out via 580 to 24 to 80. A booked window gets you a written arrival time. -
Do you work on R290 sealed systems?
We do, under our EPA 608 certification. Since R290 shows up across most of the current Crathco lineup, we check the charge, chase down leaks, and fix the sealed system rather than push a full replacement.
