Continental in Berkeley
Continental refrigeration in Berkeley.
Berkeley runs one of the densest independent food scenes in the East Bay, and the Continental gear in it isn't chain equipment you can swap blind. We see these reach-ins, prep tables, and undercounters in the restaurants around Shattuck and the Gourmet Ghetto, the late-night spots on Telegraph near campus, and the cafes and small producers out in West Berkeley.
When the cold side goes down, these owners want someone who'll actually diagnose the unit. Continental holds up well, so a cabinet that quits is rarely a write-off. We work it as an independent shop and carry fan motors, relays, thermostats, contactors, and gaskets on the truck, so a lot of these are repairs involving parts we usually stock.
Common repairs we do
What we close on the truck.
- Reach-ins that won't pull below 45. A common West Berkeley call is a Continental reach-in stuck warm on a failed evaporator-fan motor or a frosted coil from a quit defrost. We swap the motor, clear the ice, check the defrost timer and heater, and confirm the box pulls back down before we leave.
- Prep tables on dirty condensers. The Shattuck and Gourmet Ghetto kitchens run Continental sandwich and prep tables hard, and a condenser packed with flour and grease runs the compressor hot until the rail can't hold. We pull and clean the coil, check the charge, and get it holding safe temp again.
- Sealed-system and gasket work. Door gaskets are the quiet killer, hardening and pulling warm air past the seal until the compressor runs flat out. We replace them early to save the compressor. On leaks and dead compressors we do the sealed-system work in-house under EPA #1279674151528, with recovery, evacuation, and weigh-in.

FAQ
Continental in Berkeley questions, answered.
-
Can you diagnose a Continental unit instead of just swapping parts?
That's the whole point. We open the cabinet, find the actual fault, and quote that, not a guess. Berkeley kitchens run too much independent gear to gamble on parts-changing. -
Is Berkeley's water a problem for refrigeration?
Berkeley's EBMUD supply is on the softer side compared to deeper East Bay wells, so it's gentler on the sealed system. Where it bites is on ice machines at cafe and restaurant volume, which scale even soft water fast. On a Continental reach-in or prep table, water hardness isn't the main issue. -
Do you do after-hours emergencies?
Yes. We're open 7 AM to 7 PM seven days, dispatched from San Ramon, and the same number covers after-hours. Tell us it's an outage and we prioritize it.
