Sub-Zero in South San Francisco

Sub-Zero refrigeration in South San Francisco.

We are Bay Area Refrigeration Service, an independent shop based in San Ramon, and we repair built-in Sub-Zero refrigeration in South San Francisco. The city's biotech campuses sit east of Highway 101, but our Sub-Zero calls come from the residential side, west of the freeway, in neighborhoods like Westborough, Winston Manor, and Sunshine Gardens. The calls I get skew toward the larger homes climbing the hillside under the Sign Hill sign, where a real kitchen remodel made room for a full-size column.

Hillside lots settle over the decades, and I've opened built-in cabinets here where the surrounding millwork has shifted just enough that the door no longer sits flush. A Sub-Zero depends on that door sealing tight to hold its set point, so a door out of square shows up first as a fresh-food side that won't quite hit temperature no matter how the thermostat is set.

We charge $99 for the diagnostic, credited toward the repair, and we put the findings and the price in writing before we touch anything. We're not a Sub-Zero factory dealer. We're an independent shop, licensed under CSLB #1136642 and EPA 608 certified.

Common repairs we do

What we close on the truck.

  • Door strike misalignment on settled hillside foundations. On a Classic BI-42 or a Designer column set into a Westborough hillside kitchen, years of foundation settling can pull the surrounding cabinetry a few millimeters out of square. I check the door strike and gasket contact before I ever open the sealed system, because a door closing short of square makes a healthy compressor run long. We shim and re-square the door first.
  • Evaporator fan and defrost failures on the freezer side. We get a steady run of calls where the freezer side of a dual-refrigeration unit frosts over solid while the fresh-food side keeps running fine. I read solid ice on the evaporator as a defrost heater or thermostat that's quit cycling, not a failed fan. We test the defrost circuit before we replace anything, since a fan motor swapped in for a bad heater just fails again.
  • Wine column temperature drift in newer construction. The newer builds closer to the Bay tend to run 400-series Sub-Zero or U-Line wine columns, and the calls we get are a zone that's drifted a few degrees off set point. We check the door seal, the evaporator fan, and the sensor calibration, and on compressor-cooled models we check the sealed system before we call it a control board issue.

FAQ

Sub-Zero in South San Francisco questions, answered.

  • Do you work on Sub-Zero units in South San Francisco's residential neighborhoods, or just near the biotech campuses?
Our Sub-Zero work is residential, in neighborhoods like Westborough, Winston Manor, and Sunshine Gardens west of Highway 101. We don't service the lab and office buildings east of the freeway; that's a different kind of refrigeration entirely.
  • How quickly can you respond to a South San Francisco call?
We have a technician based on the Peninsula, in San Mateo County, who covers South San Francisco as part of his regular area. That means a shorter drive than dispatching from our San Ramon shop, though we still schedule a real appointment window instead of promising same-day service on every call.
  • Are you authorized by Sub-Zero to do warranty repairs?
No. We're an independent repair shop, not affiliated with Sub-Zero, so we don't perform factory warranty work. We're licensed under CSLB #1136642 and EPA 608 certified, and we give you a written quote before any repair begins.
