What we do. What we fix.

When the compressor dies, the box dies with it

A dead compressor means the box stops cooling, full stop. There’s no nursing it along. The moment it quits, a loaded walk-in or reach-in is on a countdown, and a warm box turns into a health-code problem fast. We’re an EPA-certified shop (EPA #1279674151528, CSLB #1136642) and we replace commercial compressors properly, sealed system and all, across the Tri-Valley and greater East Bay.

This isn’t a bolt-on swap. It’s sealed-system work: pull the old refrigerant out with recovery gear, braze the new compressor in, pull a deep vacuum, then weigh in the correct charge. Federal law requires EPA Section 608 certification to touch that refrigerant, which is why most handyman techs can’t legally or correctly do the job. We can, and we do it in-house.

What we replace

Most of the boxes we see run Embraco or Tecumseh compressors. They’re the standard in commercial refrigeration, sitting under reach-ins, under-counters, prep tables, and walk-ins all over the area, and we work them down to the sealed-system level. We usually stock the common repair parts, and we confirm timing after the on-site diagnosis.

We’re also HC (A3) / R290 hydrocarbon trained through Mainstream Engineering, which matters on Atosa and a lot of newer units running propane refrigerant. Those take different handling, and we’re set up for it.

Built-ins like Sub-Zero, walk-ins, and some specialty boxes cost more and occasionally need a second tech. We tell you that before we start, not after.

What it costs

Every call starts with a $99 diagnostic, credited toward the repair. You get a written quote before any work begins.

*Built-ins and walk-ins run higher and sometimes need a second tech. Tight access or shuffling neighboring units adds time too. Final price depends on the unit, the compressor, and the refrigerant. We quote first.

Fix it or replace the box

A compressor is the single most expensive repair on a commercial box, so the numbers actually matter here. On a quality unit, a True reach-in, a Turbo Air prep table, a solid walk-in, a new compressor almost always beats buying a whole new box. Those units keep running for years after the swap.

On a cheap unit it often does not pencil out. If the rest of the system is worn or the box was budget-grade to begin with, compressor replacement may be throwing good money after bad. We will tell you that straight after diagnosis rather than sell you a repair that will not hold.

A failed compressor usually traces back to a system that ran hard too long. Clean condensers and sealed gaskets keep it from working overtime. If you also run HVAC or espresso equipment, our sister shops Bay Area HVAC Service and Bay Area Coffee Service are part of the same outfit, ADRIUM Service Solutions.
