Cloudy Ice and a Weak Freeze: U-Line Outdoor Ice Maker Maintenance in Los Altos Hills

Outdoor-rated U-Line clear-ice machine built into a stone bar was making cloudy, soft cubes and never freezing a full batch. Mold had taken hold in the water trough.

U-Line Outdoor Undercounter Ice Maker Refrigeration Maintenance & Monitoring

What a few summers outdoors do to an undercounter ice maker

The unit is a U-Line U-CLR2160SOD, the outdoor-rated clear-ice model, built into a stone bar at a Los Altos Hills property. The complaint was the classic pair: cloudy, soft cubes and batches that never froze all the way. The machine kept running, so nobody had looked inside it for years.

Problem: Outdoor ice makers live in the garden, and the garden moves in. The condenser compartment had a felt blanket of dust over the coil with a drift of dried petals and leaves packed against the fins. A blocked coil can’t reject heat, so head pressure climbs and the evaporator never gets cold enough to freeze a cube solid. That’s what causes weak, cloudy ice. Inside the cabinet the story was worse: black mold had spread across the water trough and distributor, which means every batch was being made with that water.

What we did: Pulled the unit out of the cabinetry and opened the condenser bay first, then cleaned the coil down to bare aluminum. Then a full teardown of the water side: ice mold, trough, distributor and pump scrubbed, sanitized and flushed until the rinse ran clean. No parts needed; the machine itself is healthy.

Result: Freeze cycle back to spec and clean, solid ice from a sanitized water path. The owner didn’t buy a compressor or a control board. They bought a deep clean, which is what the machine actually needed.

The call came through a property management company, and this bar is one of many properties they look after. Outdoor U-Line units on a yearly maintenance schedule simply never get to this state: the coil stays clear, and mold never gets a foothold in the trough.

Sealed-system and refrigerant work stays licensed under CSLB #1136642 and EPA #1279674151528, and Los Altos Hills sits on a regular mid-Peninsula route for us. The diagnostic visit is $99, credited toward the work.
