Troubleshooting

Grocery Display Case Night Curtain Temperature Loss

Document a display case that loses temperature after a night curtain, stocking change, or airflow obstruction without guessing a failed component.

By 8 min read

A grocery display case can show a temperature change after a night curtain is closed, opened, or left out of its normal position. The same symptom can follow a stocking cycle or an airflow obstruction. The useful question is not whether the curtain is “the cause” from one event. It is how the case behaved before the curtain, during the closed period, after opening, and after the display was safely reset to its normal operating arrangement.

The $99 diagnostic is credited toward an approved repair. There is no repair price by phone; diagnose first, then quote. A written estimate comes after diagnosis and before repair work. Follow the store’s product-handling process and keep product decisions separate from equipment notes.

Record the overnight condition first

Write the case location, model or asset tag if safely visible, date, time, display or monitoring reading, curtain position, last known normal condition, and the time the case was opened for customers. Note whether the curtain was fully extended, folded, trapped, damaged, or missing from its normal track.

Record the product arrangement before moving anything. State which shelves or sections are warm, whether the condition is across the case, and whether a stocking or delivery happened before the change. A photo from the operator side can preserve the arrangement if store procedures permit it.

Use the store’s normal measurement method. Do not invent a universal case target or decide that a display value proves the product or every shelf has the same condition. Record the method, location, and time.

Check the curtain and opening cycle

Look at the curtain’s visible track, edge, handle, and contact with the case without forcing it. Note a tear, fold, obstruction, gap, or position that differs from the operating procedure. Record when the curtain was closed, when it was opened, and whether a door or customer-facing opening was blocked.

Do not adjust the track, remove a curtain, add a temporary seal, or use a tool near the case. If the curtain cannot move through its normal operator action, leave that observation for the service record. Do not claim that a replacement curtain will solve the temperature loss.

The opening cycle matters. Note the first reading after opening, any alarm, the time the case returned to its usual operation if it did, and whether the same pattern recurred. Keep the original record even if the case later appears normal.

Review stocking and airflow

List product added or moved during the last delivery or stocking cycle. Note boxes, trays, signs, packaging, or product that covers a visible supply or return opening. Keep product within the case’s normal arrangement and follow the store’s handling procedure.

Observe fans or airflow only from a safe accessible position. Do not reach through a guard, remove a shelf, scrape frost, or open a coil cover. A full shelf can create a local warm area, but an airflow change can also be a clue to a fan, frost, control, or refrigeration condition.

If staff can safely restore the documented normal arrangement, write down what moved and the result. A change after loading is an observation. It is not a component diagnosis.

Check the case exterior and doors

Record doors, sliding panels, gaskets, hinges, frames, and visible frost or water. Note a door that rebounds, a gasket gap, residue on a sealing surface, or customer traffic that keeps an opening open. Observe the surrounding equipment area for stored items or a new sound without touching the fan, coil, wiring, or service panel.

Do not pour water on frost, heat a gasket, adjust hinges, reset power repeatedly, or change the controller to force a result. If a breaker trips, leave it off and follow the store’s safety process. Smoke, sparking, burning odor, damaged wiring, or water near electrical equipment requires people to stay clear.

Protect product and communicate the event

Use the store’s product-protection and food-handling procedure when a reading or alarm requires action. Document where product was moved, who made the decision, and which case sections were involved. Do not use appearance or smell as the only basis for a product decision.

Do not promise that opening the curtain or clearing one shelf restored the case. A night event may reveal a condition that is no longer visible after the store opens. Keep the initial and later readings together.

Prepare a technician record

Send the model and location, curtain position and timing, stocking history, product arrangement, readings and methods, alarm text, fan or sound observations, door and gasket condition, frost or water, power events, last known normal condition, and access route. State all operator actions and the result of each.

The commercial refrigeration services hub covers service categories. The refrigeration FAQ explains process questions, the commercial refrigeration blog adds operating context, and the contact page can receive the case record.

Refrigerator warranty terms are 1 year on parts and labor, with 90 days on consumables. The service area is a 56-city service area, excluding Marin County. There is no repair price by phone. Diagnose first, then quote. A written estimate comes after diagnosis and before repair work.

Keep the curtain question narrow

Ask diagnosis to compare the curtain position and opening sequence with the case’s measured operation, loading, airflow, doors, frost, controls, and refrigeration system. The curtain may be a contributing observation, a trigger that exposed a separate problem, or unrelated to the underlying condition.

A narrow record prevents a general display-case article from replacing the actual service history. It tells the next person what happened overnight, what changed at opening, and what remains to be tested.

FAQ

Common questions.

Why can a display case lose temperature after a night curtain is used?
The change can involve curtain position, loading, airflow, doors, frost, controls, ambient conditions, or refrigeration operation. The timing is useful evidence but does not identify a part.
What should staff record when a case is warm after opening?
Record the curtain position, opening time, product arrangement, readings with times, alarm text, door and gasket condition, visible frost or water, sounds, and last known normal condition.
Should staff remove the case cover to check airflow?
No. Staff can observe accessible openings and product placement. Guards, covers, fans, coils, electrical areas, and refrigeration components should remain closed.
