Arctic Air Commercial Freezer Not Freezing: What to Record Before Product Is Lost

An Arctic Air freezer that's stopped holding temp needs two things fast: product protection and a clear record of what the unit's doing. Here's what to write down, the most likely causes, and when it's a licensed-tech job instead of a guess.

If your Arctic Air freezer has stopped holding temp, protect the product first, worry about the diagnosis second. Take five minutes to write down what the unit is doing right now. That record is often the difference between a tech fixing it on the first visit and starting from zero.

What to Record Before You Call Anyone

Arctic Air units show up a lot in food trucks, delis, and smaller kitchens because they’re affordable and compact. In my experience they often end up wherever there’s room, sometimes a tight corner without much clearance, and they get run hard. When one starts drifting warm, a few details matter more than the symptom itself:

  • Last known good reading, and when. Not “it was fine yesterday.” The actual number, and roughly what time you last saw it right.
  • What the display is doing now. A number that’s climbing is different from a blank screen, a flashing display, or a code you don’t recognize. Write down exactly what’s showing, even if it means nothing to you.
  • Whether the fans are running. Crack the door and listen for the evaporator fan inside, then check if the condenser fan underneath or at the back is turning.
  • Frost pattern. No frost, frost only on the evaporator coil, ice climbing the walls, and a solid iced-over coil are four different problems. A phone photo beats a description.
  • Recent door or load changes. A door propped open, a big delivery loaded in warm, or product packed tight enough to block airflow.

Have that list ready before you call, so the tech isn’t re-asking the same questions on site.

Protecting the Product While You Sort This Out

If another freezer or a walk-in has room, move the most temperature-sensitive product now rather than waiting to see if the unit recovers. Dry ice buys time if you keep some on hand. Every door opening lets in more warm air, so keep it shut as much as you can.

Don’t guess on what’s still good. Your health department has thresholds for how long product can sit above temperature before it must be pulled, and that clock started the moment the unit stopped holding. If you’re unsure where that line falls, ask your health inspector or follow your food-safety plan.

Likely Causes, Most Common First

Condenser airflow. The first thing worth suspecting on a self-contained unit like this, and common here because these units often get crammed into a tight corner with barely any breathing room. Dust and grease cake onto the coil fins, the compressor can’t shed heat, and the box slowly loses ground.

Door gasket and seal. A torn, stiff, or food-packed gasket lets warm, humid air leak in constantly. Gaskets on a budget reach-in tend to wear out faster than you’d like, and a bad seal is often behind ice showing up where it shouldn’t.

Evaporator fan. If the fan motor inside quits, cold air stops circulating even while the compressor keeps running. Uneven temps first, then the whole box climbing.

Iced-over evaporator coil. Usually downstream of a failed defrost cycle, a leaking door seal, or low refrigerant. Once the coil ices solid, airflow stops and the freezer won’t recover on its own until the cause gets fixed.

Refrigerant leak. Self-contained units run a smaller charge than a remote system, so a small leak hits harder. Refrigerant doesn’t run low by itself, so a low reading means a leak, and topping it off without finding it buys a few weeks at best.

Compressor or control board. Less likely as a first cause, more likely on an older unit. Hard starting, clicking without starting, or no start at all points here, and parts take longer to track down on units that have been running for years.

What’s Safe to Check Yourself

  • Power. Confirm it’s plugged in and any power switch is on.
  • Breaker. If it’s tripped, reset it once. If it trips again right away, stop.
  • Filter or intake. Some units have a screen on the condenser intake. If it’s clogged, note it, and clean it if it’s a simple slide-out piece.
  • Settings. Check the thermostat or setpoint. Setpoints get bumped during cleaning more often than you’d think, and a manual defrost mode can get left on by mistake.
  • Obvious blockages. Nothing stacked against the front grille, nothing crammed against the evaporator inside, a few inches of clearance around the unit.

That’s the full list. Refrigerant, electrical work, the compressor, and the control board aren’t DIY territory, and pushing further usually costs more than the visit would have.

What a Tech Actually Checks

The process is methodical, not a guess. A tech pulls the grille and checks the condenser and both fans first, ruling out the most common causes in minutes. Then they measure the temperature split across the evaporator: too small points toward refrigerant, too large usually means airflow or defrost. If the coil’s iced over, they check the defrost heater, timer, and sensor. When refrigerant is suspected, gauges on the service ports show suction and discharge pressure, telling them if the charge is right and whether there’s a leak worth chasing. On a control-board unit, they check for fault indicators and cycle power once before writing off the board.

None of that works from the outside, and guessing at it usually means paying for the mistake and the repair.

When to Call a Pro

If you’ve checked power, the breaker, obvious blockages, and the settings, and the unit’s still not freezing, it’s time to call. Skip the checklist and call right away if you smell anything electrical, hear the compressor clicking without starting, or find the coil solid with ice.

Nobody can give you an honest repair number over the phone from a symptom description. “Not freezing” covers too many problems, and a real quote comes only after a tech has eyes and gauges on the unit. Refrigerant work requires EPA 608 certification by law, live electrical work on a compressor circuit isn’t something to improvise, and a repair through a licensed shop carries a workmanship warranty that a guess doesn’t. Getting it wrong costs more than the visit would have, once you count parts, downtime, and product sitting in a box that isn’t cold.

Why is my Arctic Air freezer running but not getting cold?
The compressor running doesn't mean the system is working right. Less often it's a refrigerant leak or a control board fault. How do I know if the problem is refrigerant or just airflow?
